Architecture / New Building / Planning stage
Planning Stage // With an investment volume of close to 70 million euros, the new building of the Kunsthalle Mannheim is being built by the architects’ partnership gmp - von Gerkan, Marg and Partners. In a two-stage competition procedure, the globally operating office came out on top against strong competition. The unanimous decision was made on 3 December, 2012, after an intensive negotiation process between architecture experts, city councillors and the Stiftung Kunsthalle Mannheim. By the end of 2017, the new museum will be constructed on municipal grounds on the south side of Friedrichsplatz. After its completion, the foundation established for this endeavour will hand over the building in its capacity as the client to the City of Mannheim.more
Busy months lie behind all those involved in the new building project since the draft of gmp won the competition. To be set for the start of the actual planning phase with the competence required, the foundation appointed further key positions in operative management. The post of a chief construction officer was newly created. He will ensure the best possible control during implementation in the areas of architecture, concept and execution. Besides coordinating and controlling all processes relevant to construction, he will represent the foundation as the contracting party in the future. He will be the contact person for the general contractor gmp, assume responsibility for the assessment and evaluation of offers and the placement of orders, as well as for drawing up contracts. Furthermore, a project controller has been commissioned to manage the new building. It belongs to the core tasks to discern early enough possible deviations in the frame of the comprehensive planning and construction measures without effecting the project goal. This ensures that the building will be completed on time and without overrunning the budget. The team on the management level has now been in place since June 2013. After preparatory workshops, all persons responsible for the project, including the architects of gmp, gathered to a planning meeting in Mannheim.
