Architecture / New Building / gmp Architects

gmp // Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg founded the architects’ partnership gmp in 1965. Over the years, four more co-partners, a partner for China and eleven associated members have joined in. With more than 500 employees at 10 locations, the globally operating office is the largest in Germany. gmp has received 580 prizes in national and international competitions, including more than 280 first places and numerous awards for exemplary architecture. More than 340 buildings have been realised to date.
With its generalist approach, the architects are dedicated not only to the design and construction of the building, but also to its interior design. Energy-efficient construction, ecology and sustainability belong to the building objectives. Their projects range from single-family homes, hotels and museums to theatres and concert halls, office buildings, trade centres and hospitals. Research, sports and educational facilities are part of their repertory as are traffic structures, commercial buildings and master plans. In addition to the Congress Centre Leipzig, the Christ Pavilion for the EXPO 2000, the reconstruction of the roofing of the Olympic Stadium and the main station in Berlin, large-scale projects have also been carried out in Asia since the 1990s. The “National Museum of China” was built in Beijing between 2007 and 2010. It is the world’s largest museum with an area of 200,000 m². Building took place based on what already existed – approx. 80% of the original construction was further developed. It is a free-standing building amidst artificially laid out park grounds with water areas, offering expansive outdoor spaces for sculptures.
