Garten im Sommer

The Swiss artist Adolf Dietrich grew up in modest circumstances, and despite his talent, which was recognized at an early age, did not receive any artistic training. He earned his living as a simple factory worker and day laborer, while also tending to his parents’ farm. Nevertheless, Dietrich continually pursued his art, finding the necessary inspiration in his immediate surroundings—his choice of motifs was rooted in his deep love for the diversity of the natural and animal world of his native Berlingen, on Lake Constance.

The painting »Garden in Summer« depicts a location he visited frequently, documenting its changing appearance throughout the seasons. Equipped with a keen power of observation and an attention to detail, Dietrich captures the rural-idyllic scene in a colorful and lively pictorial composition. The painter gained greater renown through the art dealer Herbert Tannenbaum (1892–1958), who secured his participation in the exhibition “Das badische Land im Bild (Pictures of Rural Baden)”, organized by the Kunsthalle Mannheim. Adolf Dietrich is now considered one of the most important representatives of Naïve Painting and New Objectivity.
