Hito Steyerl

Hell Yeah We Fuck Die

-

"Hell Yeah We Fuck Die" - according to the magazine Billboard, the five most frequently used words in the English-speaking music charts of the 2010s - form the title of this multimedia work from Hito Steyerl (*1966 in Munich). This loosely cohesive sentence shines out in lettering set in concrete, as well as featuring as an animated caption at the beginning of the video which runs on several screens. With its dark, humorous undertone, the five words in the title of the installation appear to reflect a global sense of doom, fed by political, social and ecological crises. The complex relationship between militarisation and civil life, of technical innovation and everyday culture, is a recurring theme in Steyerl´s work. The Berlin-based film maker, author and professor for contemporary digital media, explores forms of media presentation, critically engaging with power structures while questioning mechanisms of artificial intelligence as well as the structures of art museums. Throughout she works at the interface between the visual arts, media theory and filmic praxis.
