Glasdach Neubau Kunsthalle Mannheim

To mark the opening of its spectacular new building, the Kunsthalle Mannheim is exhibiting new, site-specific works by international artists including William Kentridge, Dan Graham, Alicja Kwade and Anselm Kiefer. The artists’ rooms form part of a fresh interpretation of the Kunsthalle’s renowned collection, which includes masterpieces by Edouard Manet, Francis Bacon, and Michel Majerus, as well as an outstanding collection of sculptures by Auguste Rodin, Umberto Boccioni, and Alberto Giacometti to name but a few.
“We will no longer present artistic movements in chronological order, but rather focus on questions and ideas from everyday life, which concern us all and which open up new perspectives,” explains the Kunsthalle’s director, Dr. Ulrike Lorenz. “We question the art according to its relevance for people here and now, and focus on existential issues such as time and eternity, home and locality, body and being. We thus draw attention to the museum’s methods too, which are familiar to us all in our everyday lives: collecting and storing, ordering, presenting, and telling.”
The Kunsthalle’s significant applied art collection will also be presented in its entirety for the first time.
