Prize of the Rainer Wild Art Foundation – Anike Joyce Sadiq: Visited by a Tiger

Anike Joyce Sadiq receives the Prize of the Rainer Wild Art Foundation, awarded for the first time at the Kunsthalle Mannheim in 2020. At STUDIO the artist shows the video installation Visited by a Tiger (2019) with accompanying artist publication and a limited edition with record. The video work was created based on conversations with the psychologist Dr. Lula Morton Drewes and in collaboration with the sound artist Lamin Fofana.

The starting point is the fist as a model for the human brain and as a symbol of struggle, resistance and solidarity. In the first part of the video a neurobiological explanation can be heard, which points to the situation-dependent dominance of conscious or affective thinking and the resulting actions in threatening situations. This is followed in the second part by a psychological reference to traumas caused by exclusion and the experience of racism. The difference between the fists is minimal and yet decisive: while the thumb is on the outside of the symbol, it is on the inside of the model.
In her work, Anike Joyce Sadiq takes up the political aspect of the performativity of language and of bodies, thus proposing an expanded, updated reading of the symbol.
