Intro

The »Large Spatial Sculpture« by the German sculptor Norbert Kricke displays a highly simplified formal character. The seemingly weightless, self-supporting stainless steel element rests on the floor and remains in an upright position. Depending on our viewing angle, the line begins vertically and ends horizontally, or vice versa. In the process, it changes direction four times by means of right-angled turns. This variety of shifts gives manifest form to dynamic directional potential and free movement in space.

The special feature of the »Large Spatial Sculpture« therefore lies in its open, highly simple structure, which neither displaces nor limits the space. Like a line, the metal bar traverses the space, making it visible, without fixing it and thus rendering it measurable. In doing so, the »Large Spatial Sculpture« generates an experience of real space, the key theme of Kricke’s oeuvre. In this manner, the work heightens the viewer’s consciousness of the interpenetration of space, time, and movement, lending them tangible form.
