Max Beckmann "Fachnacht" 1925

Artworks and cultural artefacts are subjected to multiple forms of vibrations and impacts. What mechanical strains actually damage artworks? What role does the natural oscillation of the work itself play? Restorers Katrin Radermacher and Daniela Hedinger from Kunsthalle Mannheim and vibration engineer Dr. Kerstin Kracht investigated questions such as these in examining Max Beckmann’s oil Fastnacht. The symposium will include a discussion of the results of vibration measurements before and after restoration as well as a workshop on the effect of vibrations on artworks and cultural artefacts.
