Henri Laurens – Daughters of the Waves

Henri Laurens (1885–1954) is regarded as one of the most influential French sculptors of the first half of the twentieth century. He belonged to the circle of Cubists centered around Georges Braque and the world-famous Pablo Picasso. Like the latter, Laurens returned to an organic language of form in the 1920s and remained true to figurative representation from here on.

The monographic exhibition “Henri Laurens – Daughters of the Waves” at the Kunsthalle examines the main sculptural and thematic aspects of the artist’s oeuvre. Selected works from Laurens’ early and later periods, as well as drawings, collages and prints are grouped around “La Sirène” (The Siren, 1945, bronze), which belongs to the Kunsthalle’s own renowned and widely appreciated collection of sculptures.
